AMARRASS NIGHTS on 11th FEB

11 FEB 2022 (SAT) at SUNDER NURSERY in NEW DELHI, INDIA

Greetings from Amarrass Records & Amarrass Society for Performing Arts! Join us for the next edition of Amarrass Nights at Sunder Nursery, on 11 Feb 2023 with a triple bill - Jumme Khan and Group from Rajasthan, The Tapi Project led by Swati Minaxi from Gujarat, and qawwals from the hills of Uttarakhand, Rehmat-e-Nusrat.

Jumme Khan and Group: Part of a Jogi family from Pinan village in Alwar, Rajasthan, Jumme Khan epitomizes the spirit of Mewar through his improvisatory poetry that presents secularity in its subjects and themes. He is accompanied by his band of musicians featuring the harmonium, chimta, dholak, and the single-stringed bhapang. The latter is his instrument of choice, which he uses to retell ancient, mythological and contemporary stories. Khan describes himself as a Shiv bhakt and a Muslim Jogi – and he channels both identities in his performances. His observations are sharp and honest on subjects ranging from dowry to the industrial revolution.

The Tapi Project present a contemporary take on music from Gujarat, and beyond. With over 350 concerts and festivals in more than 28 countries around the world, the group’s sound is a mix of funk and folk on a hypnotic contemporary tribal groove. Their music is woven into a fabric of poetries centred around powerful vocals. They serenade about rivers, cramped up life, lost values, and the universal search for the self. "Singer Swati Minaxi's lullaby like vocals swoops like Joni Mitchell" - Songlines, UK

Rehmat-e-Nusrat is a group of young musicians from the hills of Uttarakhand in Northern India. They offer a fresh perspective on the timeless tradition of qawwali music. The group presents Qawwalis by Ustad Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan, Sufiyana kalaams by the great poets Amir Khusrao, Meera Bai, Baba Bulleh Shah, ghazals, Kabir Bhajans, and original compositions. Harmonium virtuoso & lead vocalist Sarvjeet Tamta started the group in 2014. He counts Ustadji Wadali Brothers from Amritsar, Ustadji Fakira Khan Saheb from Barmer, Rajasthan and Ustadji Padma Shri Anwar Khan Manganiyar as his teachers. Back by popular demand, the band has been busy the past year with concerts at Ziro Festival of Music, Goa, Udaipur, and more.

AMARRASS NIGHTS on 19th NOV

19 NOV 2022 at SUNDER NURSERY in NEW DELHI, INDIA

Amarrass Nights at Sunder Nursery are back with the next season of monthly shows. We are thrilled to invite you to an evening of transportive music in the aptly named Sunder Nursery.

We kick off the season with sounds from the land of Gods, Uttarakhand. Featuring the next generation of qawwali singers Rehmat-e-Nusrat, their alter ego- Kumaoni folk band HimaliMou and Guy Buttery all the way from South Africa.

HimaliMou

'Pahaadi' or mountain folk music, from Haldwani in Uttarakhand, presented by members of the group Rehmat-e-Nusrat. Rarely heard outside the mountains, the band will showcase several different styles of music from the region, including Jhora, Chanchari, Chapeli, Nyoli and Chaiti (with the first three actually dance forms with accompanying music). Traditionally the music is performed to dance at important ceremonies, festivals and gatherings, with songs in Kumaouni, Garhwali, Nepali and Jaunfari. The sonorous melodies of the Bansuri (bamboo flute), rhythmic pulses of the Dholak, hand drums, claps and joyous shouts of exuberance from the singers infuse the performances with verve and raw energy.

Their debut performance was at JLF 21.

Guy Buttery

“Guy Buttery is something of a National treasure”, says South Africa’s leading newspaper The Mercury.

As an internationally recognised musician, this multi-instrumentalist enjoys invitations to play sell-out performances all over the globe. The USA, UK, Australia, France, Brazil, and Italy have all welcomed him back year after year.   However, to simply label Guy Buttery as one of South Africa’s musical phenoms would be an injustice. His international role has surpassed merely performing concerts to foreign audiences. It has evolved into one as an ambassador of South African music, inspiring people across the world with his homegrown style at the very heart of his talent and tenacity.  Guy’s distinct unification of South African guitar music is the musical advocate for everything positive and beautiful about the place he calls home.

Rehmat-e-Nusrat

Rehmat-e-Nusrat is a group of young musicians from the hills of Uttarakhand in Northern India who brings a fresh new perspective to the timeless tradition of qawwali music. The group presents Qawwalis by Ustad Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan, Sufiyana kalaams by the great poets Amir Khusrao, Meera Bai, Baba Bulleh Shah, ghazals, Kabir Bhajans, and original compositions. The group was formed in 2014 by lead vocalist and harmonium virtuoso Sarvjeet Tamta, who counts amongst his teachers, Ustadji Wadali Brothers from Amritsar, Ustadji Fakira Khan Saheb from Barmer, Rajasthan and Ustadji Padma Shri Anwar Khan Manganiyar. The group has performed at various college festivals around North India and introduced Sufi and qawwali music to new audiences in their state. Rehmat~e~Nusrat were signed to the label Amarrass Records in November 2019 and performed at the first Amarrass Nights at Sunder Nursery concert in January 2020. The pandemic has not dampened the band's enthusiasm, and they have performed pop-up concerts at Museo Camera Museum, Throttle Shrottle, and virtual concerts with Sacred Music Seattle, In2Wild Festival UK, Hothouse Chicago, FabIndia and others. "It is an aural punch in the gut, delivered with a velvet glove" - Sarthak Kaushik, Ishq 104.6FM.

AMARRASS NIGHTS on JUNE 25th (POSTPONED)

25 JUNE 2022 at SUNDER NURSERY in NEW DELHI, INDIA

AmarrassNights is back after a fabulous start to the season. This June, we bring you a national treasure - Padma Shri Lakha Khan with a special evening of ragas and bhapang maestro and Jogi folk-poet Jumme Khan.

Padma Shri Lakha Khan, a living legend and the undisputed master of the sindhi sarangi, is a national treasure, and a National award winner for his contribution to Rajasthani folk music, and perhaps the greatest exponent of the 27-string sindhi sarangi. His music is truly secular and straddles both the classical and folk domains, with a vast songbook that incorporates Hindu bhajans (devotional songs), Sufi kalaams, popular Hindi tunes, and the ancient stories and oral histories of the region, spanning the western Indian sub-continent. He sings in over six languages including Hindi, Marwari, Sindhi, Punjabi and Multani.

Jumme Khan epitomizes the spirit of Mewar – a veritable melting pot of culture, religion and polity – in the secularity of his subjects and themes. Accompanied by his band of musicians, he uses a combination of harmonium, chimta, dholak, and the single stringed bhapang – his instrument of choice – to retell stories – ancient, mythological as well as contemporary. Khan describes himself as a Shiv bhakt and a Muslim Jogi – both identities which he channels in his performances, which are as much sharp, honest observations on contemporary subjects ranging from dowry to the advent of technology, reminiscent of the Mewati way of life, as they are his means to preserve and encourage his audiences to engage with the long standing oral tradition of the improvisatory, communicative story-telling style of the Jogis.

AMARRASS ARTIST RELIEF FUNDRAISER

COVID-19 EMERGENCY FUNDING FOR FOLK ARTISTS FROM INDIA

Amarrass was formed in 2009 with the mission to preserve the musical traditions from the deep interiors of India and to create structures for sustaining them into the future. Since then, Amarrass has recorded several legendary artists, developed artist identities, toured with them, and brought sustainability to an art form, the artists, and their families. Previously, the presentation of these oral musical traditions that have been passed on from generation to generation, was constrained to a select circle of academics, State-sponsored cultural festivals, and the traditional domains of patrons and the family villages in the state of Rajasthan. There were no quality recordings available, and rare performances outside of the region. Amarrass has preserved the traditional art forms through recordings and albums; brought the music to wide international audiences; and provided new income streams and lifted entire families into improved economic positions that have improved their ability to access education, health care, and technology literacy.

In service to its mission, Amarrass has produced 15 albums, many of them critically acclaimed, over 300 music videos published in the public domain; and toured musicians such as LAKHA KHAN and BARMER BOYS across North America, Europe, and India. Amarrass’ work has been recognized in the UNESCO Creative Economies Report, NPR, The New York Times, BBC, Songlines, Rolling Stone India, The WIRE-Adventures in Modern Sound, The Independent, fROOTS, Downbeat, and more.

"Incandescent Sufi voices that incite ecstasy" - Simon Broughton, Songlines (Barmer Boys, 'At Home', 2012 Amarrass Records)

"Top 5 Rajasthani albums ever" - fROOTS (Lakha Khan 'At Home', 2012 Amarrass Records)

"All together now: The quest to save Indian music" - The Independent UK

"How Amarrass Records took Folk to Global Acclaim" - Rolling Stone India

Under the crisis of the pandemic, these folk music traditions once again face extinction. Not only from the loss of the ability to record, tour, etc. but even their traditional performance avenues – playing at weddings, funerals, and community festivals – have been completely shut down by COVID-19. To support the artists and their families, Amarrass must now pivot its mission of sustainability.

Amarrass is seeking emergency relief funds to sustain the artists and their families through this critical time. 100% of all funds raised will be used to cover artists' basic living expenses such as housing, food, medicines, utility bills (electricity/phone) and for family emergencies.

Amarrass Nights is back in 2020! After a long hiatus, we are thrilled to announce that we have a new, beautiful venue to host our monthly series of music, arts and culture events in the capital. A UNESCO World Heritage site, Sunder Nursery is a 16th century heritage park - Delhi's first arboretum - restored and renovated by the Archeological Society of India and the Aga Khan Foundation. TOUR + WOMEX RECAP - BARMER BOYS in ITALY, CZECH REP., SCHOOL CONCERTS in DENMARK; LAKHA KHAN at WOMEX FINLAND, CZECH REP., DENMARK, SWEDEN, LE GUESS WHO?

SEP-OCT-NOV 2019

Two back-to-back European tours and 42 concerts later, we now share tour moments, pictures, video and press reviews from the Barmer Boys and Lakha Khan concerts and WOMEX Showcase.

The Boys were back in the magical city of Prague (after Respect Festival in 2018), for a concert at Palac Akropolis - a restored theatre in the Zizkov neighbourhood. Next stop was the city of Dornbirn in the Austrian Alps, followed by a trifecta of shows at ALICE cph in Copenhagen and school concerts in Denmark. We were excited to make our Italian debut with concerts in Florence, Trieste and Gualtieri (famous for its Parmigiano Reggiano cheese) and a pit-stop in Venice, the city built on water. Wrapping up the tour was a special concert for the Indian Embassy to celebrate 70 years of Indo-Danish relations, apt as we are thrilled to welcome on board Air India Denmark for graciously providing travel support for the tour.

Next up was the Lakha Khan tour, starting with the prestigious WOMEX Showcase in Tampere, Finland. Zero degrees Celsius outside, but the warm tones of the sarangi and the powerful voice of Lakha Khan easily warming up a packed hall. Our next stop was at Le Guess Who? Festival in Utrecht, The Netherlands. One of the tour highlights - performing to another full house, this time in a 1000-year old cathedral (Jenskerk), and one of the 'Top 5 Festival Highlights'! Nine more concerts in Denmark, Czech Republic and Sweden wrapped up the maestro's fourth tour of Europe.
